To unleash your potential, you need to get rid of the bad habits that are holding you back. We all have goals we want to achieve, and sometimes, many of us struggle to reach them. That's okay! But what are you doing to move forward?

What matters initially is your awareness and whether or not you are willing to gain knowledge about your limiters and then apply that knowledge. So, let me ask, what's holding you back? Chances are, you may not know the answer, and even if you think you do, you might be wrong.

It's easy to identify what's holding others back, but it can be a lot harder to see what's holding us back. That's because we're so close to ourselves that we can't always be objective. But just because it's hard doesn't mean it isn't worth doing. In fact, it's essential if you want to grow. Let's take a look at the four major limiters.

Identify what's holding you back

People often use excuses in the business world, and one or more specific limitations usually drive those excuses. Whatever that limitation may be, it usually exists on a subconscious level.

Four limiters could be holding you back in business, none of them mutually exclusive; you could be struggling with more than one. In no particular order, here's what they are:

  • Fear
  • Apathy
  • Ignorance
  • Ego

These four things tend to be blind spots, which we cannot see ourselves. For example, if you're too egotistical as a leader, you probably don't realize it. What you don't see, other people do.

Let's dive briefly into each one.

Fear

Do you know what you need to do to succeed, but you're scared to do it? Maybe you have a person you'd really like to have as a client, but you've never called them or even introduced yourself at a networking event. You're being held back by fear.

Apathy

I can't tell you how many times over the years my team and I have helped transform the sales of organizations, and not all of their salespeople made the cut. Sometimes those people were coasting by before, doing the minimum needed. They didn't really want to excel or be held accountable because they didn't care that much!

Ignorance

Have you ever met someone who said, "I'm a great listener," and then they couldn't stop talking about what a great listener they were for the next ten minutes? That person is limited by their ignorance.

Ego

If you're too wrapped up in yourself to see what's happening around you, that's ego. It might manifest as not being coachable because you think you already know everything. Maybe you're not taking responsibility for your mistakes because that would mean admitting you're not perfect. Whatever the case, ego can be a major limiter.

These are just a few examples, but I'm sure you get the idea. If you're not sure which one(s) might be holding you back, ask a trusted advisor, friend, or colleague for their honest feedback.

Once you know what's holding you back, it's time to do something about it. Remember, awareness and knowledge are only the first two steps. Next is the application of that knowledge!

Conquer your mind and take control

The higher up you are in an organization, the more important this lesson becomes. If your ego controls you, it becomes an issue for yourself and others around you. You could be creating issues you aren't even aware of.

It's easier for people outside of your organization to point out these problems than for the person creating them. It's much more difficult to point out the flaws within your own organization.

So, how do you fix this?

It all starts with awareness, knowledge, and application. Remember, you are the only one who has the power to move forward. Identify your blind spots, take control, and conquer them. It all starts with you.
